Local pubs are at the heart of their communities. When Historypin, a community history organisation, heard that the National Brewery Heritage Trust held the Charrington collection, an unseen collection of 6,000 pub photos, they wanted to help track down the pubs and discover the stories behind the photos.

Many of the pubs featured in the archive were still proudly trading and Historypin worked with their landlords to run events to gather memories and stories about the pub. They got in touch with past landlords and staff and local regulars who all came along to share their memories, and even personal photos. Everything flowed onto the Local Pub Histories page on www.historypin.org/pubs, enabling everyone to explore the Charrington archive and the unique memories these pubs evoke and add their own photos and stories. The collection on Historypin features 3,500 never-before-seen photographs of over 1,000 pubs across England.

With help from the Europeana Food and Drink project and the Hoare family, this community narrative was then shaped into a book, written by Adrian Tierney-Jones and containing crowdsourced memories, personal photos and a 'now and then' comparison of archival photographs and contemporary images.
